George J. Rigaux, lived at 309 Montgomery in St. Marietta, Ohio. For 3 years, he practiced in the superior teams of the University of Marietta where he was a student: American football, basketball and track and field.
George J. RIGAUX enlisted in the paratroopers at Paskersburg with his friend from Marietta, Gerald SNIDER. Incorporated into the Easy company of the 2/506th PIR. SNIDER will also be killed on June 6, 1944 in the crash of the plane carrying 1st Lieutenant Thomas MEEHAN. On June 6, 1944, his stick of the Hq Co of the 1/506th PIR was dropped above and around the Holdy field battery guarded by forty-seven servants. The hamlet of Le Holdy is located one kilometer southwest of the village of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, behind Utah Beach. We are near the DZ C dedicated to the 101st US Airborne. However on D-Day there is a bone in the plan of the allies, because they are not aware that a battery of 4 105 mm guns is stationed in a field near Holdy. |

The German soldiers attack the paratroopers before they even touch the ground. Some are shot while they are clinging to trees, still tied in the straps of their parachutes, stabbed with knives and bayonets, others tortured. They are then wrapped in their parachutes, tied to trees with their lines and finally their private parts castrated, for some, or burned with their thermite grenades.
A report by Captain Jim Morton written in June 45 says a lot about the facts of June 6, 44: “So many of our comrades were killed, Lieutenant-Colonel was torn to pieces by machine gun fire shortly after landing, men were shot like ducks into a firing range, HQ Compagny suffered appalling losses, our third Battalion was literally massacred!"
Among the paratroopers who landed in this parcel, there were in particular: - Cpl Georges R. Bailey, Hq Co 1/506th, buried in the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer (plot C, row 23, grave 30)
