Cpl Curtis was born in 1920 in Pittsburg, Kansas and was killed in action on July 7th, 1944 during the Airborne invasion of Normandy Cpl Curtis is the son of Louis H Curtis [1891-1960] a strip coal pit engineer and the son of Caroline Martha Hyatt Curtis [1884-1928] The 1930/40 US Census for Baker/Chicopee, Crawford County, Kansas shows Louis residing with his widowed father and brother Earl J and sisters Marguerite, Mildred, Anna, Loretta, Dora and Caroline. Cpl Curtis enlisted in the Army on April 13th, 1942. Curtis was 5'8/155lbs with brown hair and eyes and was employed at Palmer Bros Poultry in Canfield KS Cpl Curtis married Elva Verna ‘Dolly’ Hall in 1942 it is not known if any children were born of this marriage. During Operation Neptune, June 6, 1944 Cpl Curtis parachuted from his C47 Troop Transport plane with Tail#4293039/Chalk#8/#14 Drop Order. Cpl Curtis was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Croix De Guerre [French] European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star and Arrowhead,WW2 Victory Medal,WW2 Honorable Service Lapel Button, Parachute Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Presidential Distinguished Unit Emblem Corporal Curtis is interred at the Normandy-American Cemetery, France at Plot E Row 7 Grave 2399 |
