Private Roger F “Furman” Holcombe, born in 1922, was the son of Thomas N “Norwood” and Daisy J (Weatherly) Holcombe of Valdosta, Lowndes County Georgia. Valdosta is in far South Georgia 116 miles west northwest of Jacksonville, Florida. In the 1930 census 8-year-old Furman is living with his parents and siblings Louise 20, Grace 14, and Norwood Jr, 9, at 401 North Troup Street in Valdosta. His father is the Clerk of the County Court for Lowndes County. In the 1940 census 18-year-old Furman is living with his parents and brother Norwood 19, at 207 East Ann Street in Valdosta. His father is the City Probate Judge.
Furman enlisted 16 Sep 1940 at Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia. He’d had three years of high school and was single without dependents. He was 5’9” and weighed 149 lbs. He was assigned to the 507th PIR of the 82nd Airborne Division. The 507th PIR regiment arrived in the United Kingdom in late 1943, and began training and preparing for the invasion of Normandy, scheduled for the spring of 1944. Their D-Day objective during Mission Boston, part of the American airborne landings in Normandy, was to help secure the Merderet River crossing between Saint Mer Eglise and Amfreville. Although their target was supposed to be in Drop Zone T, north of Amfreville, the confusion caused by clouds and flak resulted in a wide scattering of the unit. After helping to secure the La Fiere Causeway the 507th continued to push west to cut off the Cotentin Peninsula. By 16 June they were between Pont l’Abbe and St Sauvier Le Vicomte sustaining heavy casualties (losing almost 200 men in two days shortly before being withdrawn), before returning to England in July. The NARA WWII casualty listings for Georgia show Holcombe, Roger F, Pvt from Lowndes County as Died of Wounds 5 Jul 1944. Since he died of wounds, we don’t know the date and therefore the place he was mortally wounded. Roger’s US WWII Hospital Admission Card Files says his wounds were caused by aerial bomb fragments. The Lowndes County Historical Society says he was killed near Saint Lo.
