Son of Frank Petroski and Marie Psuty Petroski, who resided in Detroit, Michigan. Husband of Mary Louise Earl Petroski Krausmann and father of Robert Petroski Jr.

Known as Bob, Lt. Petroski served as a First Lieutenant and Pilot during World War II.

In November 1943, he was assigned to the 534th Bomb Squadron, 381st Bombardment Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force.

While serving overseas, Lt. Petroski named the B-17 "My Son Bob" in honor of his son, Robert Jr., who was born in May 1944.

On 22 June 1944, Lt. Petroski flew as a co-pilot for the first time with the Sam Peak crew on the B-17 #4297084

"Spare Charlie", which took off from Ridgewell Air Field, Essex, England, on a bombing mission over Abbeville, France.

"Spare Charlie" was shot in the #2 and #3 engines right after its bombs were dropped and crashed in Les Marais d'Épagnette (The Marsh of Épagnette).

Bob was "Killed In Action" in this crash. Four days later, on 26 June, French citizens buried Bob and five of his crew members in the Mareuil-Caubert Cemetery.

On 19 April 1949, Lt. Petroski was permanently buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.
