In 1936 he was employed at H & H Food Market in Bowman Elmer first died of LST 523 on board, was the 300th Engineer Combat Battalion. LST 523 struck an underwater mine on June 19, 1944. The explosion that followed cut the ship in two, 94 passengers and 41 crew were killed. LST 523 left Portsmouth on 06/18/44. On June 19, 1944, the boat anchored off the landing beaches, the LST 523 was carrying tanks and ammunition.
