Eddie, beloved son of John Christopher and Lula Mae Harrison Sowder. His brothers and sisters are: Casper, Robert, Lena Clercy, William, Margaret, James, Henry, Mary Grace and Dolores Sowder. He was a member of the 502d Parachute Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, U. S. Army and was killed in action following the D-Day Invasion in Normandy, France. He was shot by a German sniper and died passing his rifle with bayonet drawn to his Lt Col Robert G. Cole in command. The first bayonet battle of the 101st Screaming Eagles at Carentan France on June 11, 1944. | |||||||

There is a memorial outside the museum depicting Private Sowder, his commanding officer and 2 other young men commemorating the bayonet charge. The memorial will be dedicated June 4, 2014 honoring the 70th anniversary of this historic battle. Biography by: Madeleine | |||||||
