STORY

Henry Annunzio was born on the 21st of May, 1915 in Oralabor, Iowa, to Ralph and Frances Annunzio, both Italian immigrants.

Henry had a family of 8 which moved from Spring Hill, Iowa into the main Des Moines area in 1927.

In 1930, they moved out to Jefferson, Iowa, where Henry attended school. In 1935, Henry married Cornelia Orin and had a daughter, Dixie Eida, but later divorced and left Cornelia with the child.

In May of 1942, Henry joined the Army and in 1943 was transferred to England to prepare for the European Front.

PVT Annunzio was assigned to Co. B, 743rd Tank Battalion, where he participated in the D-Day operations on Omaha Beach.

It is unknown whether PVT Annunzio was on Co. B's Landing Craft that was destroyed or he made it to the beach, but nevertheless, he was killed on the initial advance of the Battalion.

PVT Annunzio was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart for his service and is currently buried in the Normandy American Cemetery in Normandy, France.
