STORY

Pfc. Anton J. ELVESAETER was born on November 24, 1906 in Trondheim, Norway.

He moved to the United States between the ages of 17 and 18 to live with his uncle.

In 1940, when the Germans invaded Norway, Elvesaeter immediately enlisted and left for Chichester, England in December 1943 to join preparations for D-Day.

The Saint-Marcouf Islands, located just off-shore from the landing area on Utah Beach, came to the attention of the Allied high command during D-Day preparations.

Not wanting to ignore a potential risk and seeing the strategic potential of the posts, two teams of two men of the 4thCavalry Group were sent to land as scouts on the islands on June 6, 1944.

The scouts would be followed by four LCAs (Landing Craft Assault) of 30 men to seize the island.

The scouts landed and found the islands unoccupied but littered with S-mines.

ELVESAETER, part of the 24th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, was killed instantly by an S-mine shortly after reaching the island.
