STORY

GUNTHER Walter Joseph Jr. was born January 30, 1918 in Malden ( Massachusetts ) is a graduate of Catholic Boys and in 1937 he continued his studies at Northeastern University in Boston.

In 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and volunteered for airborne troops. It passes successively through the following camps :

In 1942 he met a nurse ( nurse ) also in the army Bobb Mary FARLEY .

He married and their union a child to be born towards the end of August 1943.

Le frère de Mary Bobb FARLEY qui servait dans l'US NAVY est tué le 7 Décembre 1941 lors de l'attaque de Pearl Harbour .

On August 30, 1943 , two days after his departure, First Lieutenant Walter J. GUNTHER learns the birth of his daughter Susan while his unit is aboard SAMARIA that goes to LIVERPOOL ( England).

Happened on September 18 they earn their camp at Aldbourne ( Wiltshire ).

June 5 evening he boarded a C47 Skytrain from the Airfield UPPOTERY .

Happened over the Cotentin , the German Flak will disrupt convoys. Victim of this change in release Walter.J . GUNTHER does not jump on the Drop Zone planned but the village of Sainte Mère Eglise Drop Zone of the 82nd Airborne.

In the book Albert PIPET " Parachutes on Holy Mother Church" PFC Clarence MERRILL 's D/506e testifies on the place of the church there was a terrible blow when he found killed in a tree Lieutenant Walter GUNTHER its own Chief stick .

Since the First Lieutenant Walter.Joseph.GUNTHER Jr buried in the cemetery of Colleville Driveway Block E Rang 24 N° 25 .
