Allan Andrade, a retired New York police lieutenant, began to draw the thread of the Léopoldville drama somewhat by chance. When he understood what it was about, he didn't let go and continued to write his work entitled S.S. Leopoldville Disaster, published in 1997. To do this, he researched and met the survivors and their families of this tragedy which occurred on the evening of December 24, 1944, a few kilometers from Cherbourg, when the German U-Boot 486 torpedoed it and sent it to the bottom. Inappropriate decisions added to the catastrophe, decimating the ranks of the American 66th Infantry Division and depriving 763 young men in the prime of life of a future. Military authorities and governments have hidden the truth for too long. It is all the dispossession of this tragedy, and the waste of young souls who perished too soon, that Allan Andrade expresses so strongly in his poignant work.
