STORY | |||||||
Second Lieutenant Walter Rex Allaman, Jr., born in Amarillo, Tx, 4 Aug 1919, was the son of W. Rex and Carryee A (Rone) Allaman of Swan, Taney County, Missouri. Swan is 48 miles south southeast of Springfield. He left a wife, Jane, in Mountain Grove. Mountain Grove is 62 miles due east of Springfield. In the 1920 census 6-month-old Walter is living with his parents in Amarillo, Potter County, Texas. His father is a traveling salesman for a hardware company.In the 1925 Kansas state census 5-year-old Walter is living with his parents and brother Jack 3, 1346 Canton Ave., in Marmaton, Bourbon County, Kansas. His father is still selling hardware.In the 1940 census 20-year-old Walter is living with his parents and brother Jack 18, and twins George and William 12, in Swan, Missouri. His father owns a golf course.Walter filed his draft registration on 16 Oct 1940 at Forsyth, Taney County, Missouri.Lt Allaman was the bombardier on B-24 Liberator 42-109830 “Daisy Mae Skraggs” piloted by 1st Lt James Ogden. His plane went down in the English Channel near the Chausey Islands on a mission to Granville, France. Five of the crew were killed, five were rescued by French fishermen but later captured by German troops. 2nd Lt Walter R. Allaman Jr., bombardier of the B-24 Liberator 42-109830 “Daisy Mae Scraggs”, took off from station 125 Bungay, Suffolk, UK on a bombing mission over Granville. The aircraft’s engines were in need of maintenance and its crew was “flak happy” and replete with officers who had never met. The weather also conspired against them, enabling only seven bombers to fly to the secondary target, Granville, as the primary was obstructed by clouds. Turning off the bomb run over Granville, they came under attack by Me-109s. The plane’s flight deck caught fire. With no one to put it out and the fire spreading to the bomb bay, the pilot ordered the crew to bail out but stayed on to level the plane off. That didn’t save Allaman, who died in the flames.
