American Lieutenant Nathan Baskind, who had landed at Utah Beach in June 1944 with Company C of the 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion, was ambushed during the fighting leading to Cherbourg.

Seriously wounded, Baskind had been captured by the Germans before succumbing to his injuries in a German medical antenna near Cherbourg on June 23, 1944.
His body was then buried in a mass grave of the German army, before being transferred after the war to the military cemetery of Marigny, then administered by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge.

In February 2024, his remains were identified through medical research. Nathan Baskind was finally buried on June 23, 2024 with military honours in the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer in Normandy, after resting 80 years in a place of German memory.
