STORY

 Private First-Class Benjamin B. Garadetsky, serial #32007397, was born in Zhitomir, Russia (now Zhytomyr, Ukraine), one of four children of Max (Motl) and Blanche (Bina) Liffer Gorodetsky. Zhytomyr is 86 miles west of Kiev. He immigrated to the United States in October 1921

In the 1925 New York state census 11-year-old Ben is living with his parents and siblings Molly 13, and Ida 2, at 611 E 137th Street in the Bronx.In the 1930 census 16-year-old Ben is living with his parents and siblings Molly 18, Ida 7, and Sam 1, at 1015 E 156th Street in the Bronx.

His father is a finisher for a fur coat shop. Benny is an errand boy for the shop.In the 1940 census 25-year-old Benny is living with his parents and siblings Molly 28, Ida 17, and Sam 11, at 354 Cypress Avenue in the Bronx.

His father is still a finisher of fur coats. Benny works in a button factory.Benny enlisted 17 Feb 1941 in New York City. He'd had a grammar school education and was single without dependents. His civil occupation was listed under the manufacture of miscellaneous products. He was 5'7" and weighed 157 lbs.

He was assigned to the 66th Armor Regiment attached to the 2nd Armored Division.On 23 Aug 1944 the command post of the 2nd Armored Division was just north of Brezolles. Brezolles is 65 miles west and a little south of Paris.The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for New York show Garadetsky, B B, Pfc from Bronx County as killed in action 23 Aug 1944. Benny was killed in a Luftwaffe bombing.Benjamin was incorrectly buried under a Latin cross.

The stone Star of David grave marker for Pfc. Benjamin Garadetsky in Normandy American Cemetery replaced the incorrect Latin Cross headstone in 2018 through the efforts of "Operation Benjamin", named after Benny.

DIVISION CHRONICLE


Elements of the Division first saw action in North Africa, landing at Casablanca, 8 November 1942, and later taking part in the fighting at Beja, Tunisia, but the Division as a whole did not enter combat until the invasion of Sicily, when it made an assault landing at Gela, 10 July 1943. The Division saw action at Butera, Campobello,-and Palermo. After the Sicilian campaign, the Division trained in England for the cross-Channel invasion, landed in Normandy D plus 3, 9 June 1944, and went into action in the vicinity of Carentan; ; the Division raced across France in July and August, drove through Belgium and attacked across the Albert Canal 13 September 1944, crossing the German border at Schimmert, 18 September to take up defensive positions near Geilenkirchen. On 3 October, the Division launched an attack on the Siegfried Line from Marienberg, broke through, crossed the Wurm River and seized Puffendorf 16 November and Barmen 28 November. The Division was holding positions on the Roer when it was ordered to help contain the German Ardennes offensive. The Division fought in eastern Belgium, blunting the German Fifth Panzer Army's penetration of American lines. The Division helped reduce the Bulge in January, fighting in the Ardennes forest in deep snow, and cleared the area from Houffalize to the Ourthe River of the enemy. After a rest in February, the Division drove on across the Rhine 27 March, and was the first American Division to reach the Elbe at Schonebeck on 11 April. It was halted on the Elbe, 20 April, on orders. In July the Division entered Berlin-the first American unit to enter the German capital city.

CHRONIQUE DE DIVISION
