STORY | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Private Leonard Linden, 30, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was killed in action in France August 18, 1944 while serving with the 359th Infantry Regiment. The regiment was part of the 90th Infantry Division, nicknamed the “Tough ‘Ombres,” that landed at Normandy two days after D-Day and began fighting across France. Leonard (whose full name sometimes appears as Gustave Leonard Linden) was born September 20, 1913 to Gustave Adolph Linden and Augusta Erickssen Linden. Both parents were Swedish immigrants who came to the United States separately in the 1880s. They were married in Salt Lake City in 1896. Leonard was the youngest of their six children, three boys and three girls. His mother died at age 61 in 1938 of pneumonia and kidney disease. His father was a teamster in the early 1900s and later was proprietor of a candy store and a restaurant. Leonard graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City and attended LDS Business College. He married Pauline Eldredge in Salt Lake on October 11, 1934. They had a daughter, Geraldine, who was born around 1938. They were divorced at the time of his death. His draft card, filed in October 1940, shows him working for the J.E. Steele Roofing Company in Salt Lake City. He was drafted January 4, 1944 and went overseas in June. His unit landed in France shortly after the D-Day invasion. Private Linden is interred at the Brittany American Cemetery in France. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
