The mission of 17 June 1944

On June 17, 1944, two squadrons of the 367th FG, composed of 12 P-38 of the 393rd FS and 17 P-38 of the 392nd FS, participate in a mission aimed at the attack of a yard of Epernon.

the German attack

Around 14:30, the 393rd FS, flying at 1000 meters altitude, is surprised in the sector Dreux-Evreux by 8 Me-109 which make a first very fast pass before disappearing in the layer of clouds.

The American P-38s, very surprised, do not have time to get rid of their bombs before the end of the first attack.

Even after dropping their bombs, American pilots (many of whom are inexperienced replacements) are struggling to regroup.

During this first pass, the P-38 (Nr 42-104079) piloted by Lieutenant George S. WHITE (number 0-756530) was fatally hit and crashed in flames during the same fight, near Nonancourt. The 22-year-old pilot died in the aircraft he was flying exceptionally since it was the usual version of another pilot, EARL ODY. The crashed P-38 was called "Lucky" while the aircraft assigned to Lt WHITE was called "Mickey Fine" (the nickname given to his wife was "Mickey".

Apparently more experienced and aggressive, the Germans repeat their attack and follow a confused melee. The leader of the 393rd FS, Captain GRIFFIN pursues a Me-109, on the level of the trees. The German is losing speed and crashes.

The P-38 J (Nr 42-58060) piloted by Lt Earl PETERS (registration number: 0-756683) also shoots another Me-109.

However, the latter will not live long enough to enjoy his victory since he is himself shot down by another Me-109, a few seconds later. His plane crashed in Dampierre-sur-Blévy and the pilot found death.
