STORY

1LT WEDUL, VERNON O.

 From Thief River Falls, Minnesota

MIA 22-6-1944 as pilot of P-38J / #42-67510 / 8L-'?' / MACR 6051. Hit by flak while operating over Normandy the pilot tried to return to base in England. 8 to 10 miles off Cherbourg his aircraft caught fire and he was forced to bale out. His dinghy was on fire and he had to ditch this, landing in the English channel without a dinghy. Despite the dropping of dinghies by Air Sea Rescue aircraft these did not reach the pilot. Air Sea rescue vessels were too late to reach Lt Wedul and he was lost at sea.

1Lt Wedul is commemorated on the Normandy Tablets of the Missing.
