Aéro-Mémoire-39/45 76 years ago July 13, 2020. The young American pilot "2Lt Phillips ABBOTT Jr, 22 years old, died after leaving the controls of his P-47D-11-RE 42-75412, coded: B2. It belonged to 390 FS- 366FG. 9th USAAF He had taken off from the advanced base of St Pierre du Mont 14, for an armed reconnaissance in the direction of Tours. His P-47 was seen, leaving a trail of smoke; probably hit by flak shards. Lt ABBOTT attempted to evacuate his cockpit, but probably struck part of his aircraft. perhaps he was also injured in his cockpit !? no one will know! he probably passed out and fell parachute unopened, near the farm of La Ducherie in Tresson in the Sarthe. The plane fell at La Guérinotte in Tresson as well. The body of Lt Phillips ABBOTT was buried in the town !? Recorded on September 29, 1944, to be buried in the US Military of St Corneille near Le Mans. Finally and definitively buried At Brittany American Cemetery in St James 50. plot N, Row 5, Grave 12. | |||||||
