Maddox (DD-622), departed Norfolk for Algeria, where she became a unit of Task Force, the assault force for the invasion. As the assault troops opened the Battle of Gela on 10 July, Maddox was on antisubmarine patrol about 16 miles offshore. Steaming alone, the destroyer was attacked by a German bomber and an squadron Italian. One of the bombs exploded Maddox's magazine, causing the ship to roll over and sink within two minutes. William died on Jul 10th, 1943, at the age of 22, at sea. William was commemorated in Sicily and Rome, Italy American Cemetery. William’s last known status was missing. | ||
