Bruce R. NOLAND-W.W.II-died 12 August 1944. Pfc. BRUCE R. NOLAND, 21, was killed in action somewhere in France on August 12, his wife Marilyn learned Sunday by telegram from the war department.
A member of the infantry, Pfc. Noland had been overseas a little over two months and had but been assigned to his new unit.
His wife received a letter from him dated the 10th, just two days before he was killed stating that he was alright, telling of his new assignment and that he expected to go into action in the next few days. From this information it was believed he had been in action but one day when he was killed.
The death of the young soldier leaves his bride of a year, a widow and also leaves a baby of two months, Mickey Jay.
Other survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Noland of 98 West Park Drive (Shelby) with whom his wife and son have been living, a brother Bazil in the Navy and a sister, Mrs. Gail Neff in Mansfield. Pfc. Noland was a graduate of the Shelby High School in 1940, a former employee of the Shelby Salesbook Company and had entered the armed services on November 30, 1942.
Pfc. Noland is believed to be the first Shelby service man killed in action overseas in this war. (Daily Globe, Tuesday, 5 September 1945)
