William Dennis Lyons was born in Linden, South Dakota on May 19, 1913. William was one of the seven children born to Dennis Lyons and Beatrice Lyons. William lived on a ranch near Keyapaha and attended Beaver Creek School for grades one through eleven and attended St. Mary Academy for the twelfth grade. He graduated from St. Mary Academy in Oneill, NE and attended barber school in Sioux Falls, SD. His interests included horseback riding, hunting, baseball, and driving cars. William was a barber in Rapid City, SD and in Winner, SD. On June 6, 1939 he married Elna Gallimore in Rapid, SD. To this union, two children were born: Sharon Lyons Snoozy and Marilyn Lyons. Sharon was four when her father died and her sister, Marilyn, was only one. William’s sister, Angela, said he was very social and liked people.
On October 1, 1943, the selective service removed the ban on introducing fathers, so after that all married men with children were eligible for the draft. William was drafted into the Army in Winner, SD and trained in Camp Grant Illinois. He was shipped out of Rock Island, IL and his family thinks he was stationed in France. He held the rank of private. He was a member of the 167th General Hospital.

A quote from a letter to his wife, Elna, in 1944 said, "Darn I wish this would hurry up and be over."
In a letter dated July 19, 1945 from the Adjutant General’s Office, Edward F. Witsell, to Mrs. Elna Lyons, confirmed the telegram informing her of the death of her husband. The official casualty report states that her husband died on July 2, 1945 in the vicinity of Marseille, France, as a result of pneumonia. The place of Army Private William D. Lyons’ original burial was Luynes, France near Aix en Provence. The place and date of his subsequent burial is Rhone America Cemetery and Memorial in Draguignan, France.
