Battle history from August 5th to 7th

SATURDAY 5 AUGUST 1944

Chérencé-le-Roussel:
Moving through the sectors of 4th and the 1st division, 39th R.I of the 9th D.I. American control the head of the bridge crossed , which the tanks of the infantry of the 4th D.I hold. Perriers en Beauficel:
In this commune, dominating the valley of Sée, hard combat continued from August 5, to August 11 ,1944. 11 o’clock a.m., the first Americans penetrate the territory of the commune. They occupy the farm La Lyonnière at the edge of the wood of Lingeard, close to the river, dominated by La Héneudière .the Germans are well entrenched in the hamlet La Héneudière and prepare a counter-attack, supported by their artillery.

SUNDAY 6 AUGUST 1944

Bellefontaine, Chérencé-le-Roussel, Mesnil-Tôve: The Germans retain Mount-Furgon,the height dominating the valley of Sée on one side and the plain of Mesnil-Tôve on other side.The 39th R.I. American arrive at the farm of La Gallerie (low of the Mount-Furgon side plain of Mesnil-Tôve) and try to maintain it . In the night, supported by the tanks, the Germans coming from St. Barthélémy and then Bellefontaine advance towards the west i.e. Le Mesnil-Tôve. They hustle American defenses. Juvigny / Saint-Barthélémy / Mortain : The 30th American division after Juvigny moves on to St. Barthélémy and Mortain where it relieves the first division. 117th R.I occupies the area of St-Barthélémy and the heights which dominate Bellefontaine and the northern slope of Sée. The Americans do not dissimulate their concern and envisage a retreat. A German staff is established at Rancoudray, around which canon are concentrated. At 23h30, a message of an imminent German attack coming from the north and the east of Mortain is diffused. It is too late to prevent all the American units going to meet the threat .

MONDAY 7 AUGUST 1944

Bellefontaine/Chérencé-le-Roussel: Hidden in the wood of Bellefontaine and Chérence-le-Roussel, the 2nd P.Z of the general Von Luettwitz who is in connection with the 116th P.Z gets under way at 2 a.m. of the morning in consequence of the delay of the 1st P.Z. (see St. Barthélémy ). Because of the darkness, there is the surprise because there was no preparation of artillery. The Americans of the anti-tank company of the 39th R.I of the 9th division which receive the shock and are forced to leave by foot and abandon their vehicles. From Chérencé-le-Roussel towards Mesnil-Tôve a company of infantry and several anti-tank devices receive the order to attack and stop the German advance which seizes Mesnil-Tôve and springs towards Mesnil-Adelée. the 4th division had reacted effectively, with artillery , destroying in an afternoon , a German column (surely the 116th Panzer, to see Perriers-en-Beauficel ) which tried to move through its front line . The 4th division, in addition to releasing a regiment the 12th R.I. (this regiment entered Paris with the 2nd D.B of Leclerc) so that it is attached to the 30th division, moved a second regiment from Chérencé-le-Roussel to support 39th R.I, which had been divided into two by the initial push. In spite of the dangerous situation, Colonel Bond of the 39th R.I., at the beginning of afternoon moved the elements in the south of the German charge and made them turn and cross the sector of the 4th division, to join the battalions of infantry on northern bank of Sée.
