STORY

Extrait du rapport du Capt Clarence R McCray, équipier (source: Accident Report - AFHRA) :

At 1550, 7 November 1944, I became airborne to run an Night Fighter Training NFT with Capt J.S.M. Lee, pilot, and 2nd Lt L.R. Potter, radar observer. Capt Lee completed his interception whith me as target. We drew apart and began my interception with Capt Lee as target.

My radar observer immediately reported a contact at 2 1/2 miles. I closed to 1200' range,  AirSpeed Indicator (indicateur de vitesse) ASI  195, target flying straight and level at 1500' altitude, ASI estimated 180 mph. The time was between 1615 and 1620.

Capt Lee's aircraft pulled very abruptly into a steep climb, slow rolled, and as it almost completed the roll, it went into a right turn which tightened to a flat spin.

At about 500' altitude, the spin increased in speed to a normal spin. The aircraft struck the water, still spinning, with the fuselage at angle of 60° to 75° to the surface of the water.

The crash occured at 43° 18'N, 5° 9'E, about 4 miles from the coast and 15 miles west of Marseille.
