La division est réactivée le 25 Mars 1942 et devient Airborne Division le 15 Août suivant. Elle s'entraine d'abord Camp Clairborn en Louisane sous les ordres du Major Général Omar Bradley puis au Fort Bragg en Caroline du Nord.
Après il suive une partie de leur entrainement de base au Camp Blanding FLORIDE Transfert en Grande Bretagne en Avril 1943. La 82nd Airborne Division passera par Casablanca(entrainement), en Sicile(engagement-combat), Gela TUNISIE(Rééquipements), Comiso Licata Castelvetrano Aéroport de Trapani SICILE(engagement-combat). Salerne Naples Anzio ITALIE(engagement-combat) Belfast(entrainement) . Le 26 Mai 1944 La mission du 82nd est fixée: Prendre le contrôle des environs de St Sauveur le Vicomte , afin d'empêcher les forces allemandes de bloquer les unités débarquées à Utah Beach.
Décollage de North Witham dans un C47 Série 6, direction la drop zone T La DZ n a pas été mis en place à l'heure prévue. Seule une machine Eureka a été mise en fonction mais pas de marquage au sol. L'Eureka n'a été mise en fonction que 15 minutes avant l'arrivée des vagues d assauts. La dispersion des C 47 est dû à la flak allemande car les pilotes ont dû reprendre de l altitude et de la vitesse La machine EUREKA fonctionna encore 20 minutes après. La zone des 3 sticks du 507 PIR était Amfreville Gourbesville A la fin des hostilités 35 pathfinders sont morts blessés ou capturés. Dans la nuit du 16 Juin 1944 le 507 PIR établit une ligne de défense allant de Franquetot Coigny Baupte. L'artillerie allemande pilonnera ses positions jours et nuits Le 20 Juin 1944 le 2 et 3 bataillons tiennent Vindefontaine ou ils y restent en attendant d'être relevé par la 90th Infantry Division . A cette période l'artillerie allemande très active causa de nombreuse perte.
