STORY | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Killed in Action near St. Lo, France Adolph Schumacher was born in Eureka, McPherson County, South Dakota, on November 20, 1916. He was one of ten children born to Jacob and Katherina Schumacher. His brothers were August, Arthur, Edmund, and Henry; his sisters were Ida, Sophie, Matilda, Hildagard, and Verna. Adolph was educated through the eighth grade at Eureka. He liked music and playing in a band. Adolph farmed until he was drafted into the Army. On June 30, 1942, Adolph Schumacher entered the service. He was trained at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, as part of Company G, 47th Infantry. On October 16, 1942, Pfc. Schumacher was sent overseas and initially stationed in England. He was engaged in combat in North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. Pfc. Adolph Schumacher was shot and killed instantly in France on July 20, 1944. He is buried at Plot F, Row 1, Grave 32, Normandy American Cemetery at St. Laurent-sur-Mer, France. Adolph was posthumously awarded the Combat Badge, Purple Heart, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with a bronze star, WW II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. In addition, Pfc. Schumacher was the first casualty in the area of Long Lake and thus the Legion post has been named after him. This entry was respectfully submitted by John Briscoe, 8th Grade, Gettysburg Middle School, Gettysburg, South Dakota, on March 6, 2002. Information for this entry was provided by Edmund Schumacher, Eureka, brother of Adolph Schumacher. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
